Cal Cruises to Victory
Cal 7, Amador Valley 2
By Chris Jackson Friday May 10, 2013
PLEASANTON-After a big win over the second-ranked team in the
country, Granada, on Wednesday, Cal kept their hot-streak going with great
performances offensively and defensively en route to an easy 7-2 victory over
host Amador Valley to spoil the Dons’ senior day.
Shutting out the #2 team in the country (5-0) on Wednesday was a
big win for the Cal program, and they didn’t seem to have any side effects after
that win. One example of that might be overconfidence, but they didn’t seem
overconfident at all against Amador, they just went in hoping to get the
victory, and they did.
The Grizzlies offense was all over Amador’s pitchers. They
scored seven runs and had ten hits. They not only frustrated the Dons pitchers,
but they also frustrated the Dons infielders, who accumulated four errors,
definitely contributed to the loss.
Dons starting pitcher Michael Echavia was roughed up for the
second consecutive start. Last Friday at Granada, he pitched just 3.1 innings
and gave up five earned runs and eight hits en route to a 15-0 loss. But this
Friday against Cal proved no different. He pitched 3.1 innings and gave up five
earned runs and six hit while walking four Grizzlies batters and striking out just two.
This season he has been great behind the plate, he came into the game hitting .412,
and he had 2.90 ERA coming into the game on the mound.
Echavia’s first inning looked great, his mechanics were great
and Cal batters couldn’t hit him. He struck out the first two batters. But he
got into a second inning jam with runners on first and second, but luckily got
out of the inning. Cal batters were all over the Amador pitchers getting ten hits
and seven runs off of them.
Grizzlies pitcher Nate D’Emilio had a great outing on the mound
pitching six innings and gave up just two earned runs and five hits. Cal
pitchers this week gave up just two runs.
Cal took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third in a very unusual
way. With runs on first and third, Cal was putting on the hit-and-run, but the
runner on first left too early, and got picked off while Daniel DeFazio scored,
on what was ruled a stolen base, to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. Amador
responded right back in the bottom half of the third on a single by pitcher
Michael Echavia, to tie the game at one. Echavia later moved to right field
after getting taken off the mound.
Cal broke the game open in the fourth inning with a five-run
inning which forced Amador to make a pitching change and go to Nick Carney, who
later got taken out and moved to first base. After a double by Austin Chauvin,
Nick Truex hit an RBI double to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead, but that didn’t
signify the end of the scoring that inning for Cal. Junior shortstop Cameron
Santos, who came into the game hitting .351, then hit a two-run single to give Cal a
4-1 lead. After Santos stole second and advanced to third on a wild-pitch,
Daniel DeFazio hit a line-drive for a double to break the game open and give the
Grizzlies a 5-1 lead. Nick Allman then reached first on an error, and DeFazio
advanced to third and let Travis Roberts lay down the picturesque bunt single to
give Cal a 6-1 lead.
Amador pitcher Nick Carney got into a bases-loaded jam in the
5th inning with one out, but no one scored after both Cameron Santos
and Daniel DeFazio flied out.
Long Beach State-bound catcher Daniel Jackson for Amador didn’t
want to leave senior night without doing something special. He hit a line-drive
over the left field fence right where some class rooms are ten feet behind the
fence, to narrow the Cal lead to 6-2, but that was the last of the scoring for
the Dons and their senior day didn’t go as planned.
The last of the scoring came in the sixth inning for the
Grizzlies. Following a single by Travis Roberts, AJ Velasquez hit an RBI double
to give Cal a 7-2 lead and they never looked Back to improve their win-streak to
six games.
Senior left fielder Nick Truex came into the game batting .348,
and went 3-for-4 with all of his hits being line drives to right field.
Riding a current six-game winning streak, Cal looks to close out
the regular season next week with games against Foothill and De La Salle. They
still have a chance to share the East Bay Athletic League title, but Granada is
11-1 in EBAL while Cal is 9-3, and Granada has games at Monte Vista and
Livermore, but Granada already clinched at least a share of the league title
with an 8-4 win over the #79 team in the country, De La Salle and knocked the
Spartans out of contention for the league title.
Amador Valley was still hoping to be in contention for EBAL, but
after three consecutive losses, they were knocked out of the title hunt, but
they have already clinched a spot in the NCS Division 1 playoffs, along with Cal.
Player of the Game: Nick Truex. The senior left fielder went 3-for-4 with an RBI
to help Cal cruise to a 7-2 victory at Amador Valley.
Pitching: Win-Nate D’Emilio (8-2).
Loss-Michael Echavia (5-3)
