Custer, Spartans Hand Foothill FIrst Defeat
By Chris Jackson Friday October 24, 2014
CONCORD, CA-Despite the murmurs that the NorCal streak could be in some jeopardy, De La Salle played it up
as usual.
The Spartans (8-0) took a 28-7 lead at halftime en route to the 56-21 victory over the Foothill Falcons (7-1), who is
right behind them in the rankings.
Running back play was all they needed once again as Andrew Hernandez gave the Spartans a 28-7 lead late in the
first half on a 13-yard touchdown run. Hernandez finished with 185 yards and three scores on just 12 carries.
Antoine Custer also had another breakout game, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown. He gave De La Salle a quick
14-0 advantage on a 33-yard run.
Not much else was needed for the Spartans in the dominant victory. Anthony Sweeney and Chris Vanderklugt threw a
combined nine passes as the run game was highly effective.
Sweeney left the game in the first quarter after suffering an apparent elbow injury. Vanderklugt came in and completed
6-of-7 passes for 125 yards alongside three total touchdowns.
Although De La Salle ended up pulling the rout, Foothill kept it close for awhile and was in striking distance of making
it a tied game for much of the first half. A missed field goal and a fumble prevented anything from progressing as the
first half wore on.
SMU quarterback commit Kyle Kearns found his receivers and showed his college prowess throughout as he went 24-of-37
for 157 yards and a touchdown run. His touchdown scamper cut the deficit to 42-21 late in the third.
Junior Isaiah Floyd again contributed to Kearns' performance as he had 33 rushing yards and 53 receiving yards alongside
a 76-yard kickoff return. Floyd trimmed the De La Salle lead to 21-7 on a one-yard run with 2:21 remaining in the first half.
A victory over Granada next week would ensure Foothill's first East Bay Athletic League title since 2006. If it beats either
Granada or Amador Valley, EBAL is all theirs as the Falcons hold tiebreakers over Cal and San Ramon Valley due to the
head-to-head results.
