De La Salle Advances to NCs Championship
By Chris Jackson Friday November 28, 2014
CONCORD, CA-The streak lives on.
De La Salle's Northern California streak continues despite an early scare in a 45-17 victory over the visiting California
Grizzlies. The win puts them in the North Coast Section Division One championship next Saturday night at Dublin High
School.
Two quick touchdowns from junior Antoine Custer put De La Salle up 14-0 and it appeared the contest was well out of
reach already. Cal thought otherwise.
A field goal and an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Woolridge to Justin Locklear put the Grizzlies within 14-10 and
had the upset murmurs in full effect. As always, the Spartans delivered and used a strong second half in the win.
Andrew Hernandez delivered the crunching blow on a 65-yard scoring run to make it 38-10 late in the third quarter.
Down 28 points, there wasn't much that Cal could do against the number three team in the nation.
Hernandez rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns on just 14 carries and became a brutal task for the Grizzlies to
take him down. His dominant performance helped him surpass 1500 yards on the ground this season.
Antoine Custer complemented the stellar outing from Hernandez in the backfield and was also a potent force offensively.
He ran for three touchdowns and 112 yards on 11 touches.
Custer's scores were the first touchdowns of the night for the Spartans on 5, 20 and 13 yards, with the last one putting
them up 24-10 just before the half. A couple more carries will help him tally 1500 yards this season.
The De La Salle defense contained the usually physically Cal offense and held junior running back Justin Locklear to 31
yards on 14 carries. Locklear did, however, record a receiving touchdown.
Jacob Woolridge was one of the few Grizzlies to stand out as he completed 12-of-23 passes for 189 yards and a pair of
scores. His deep downfield arm was key in the Grizzlies success all season, as was the case tonight.
Cal finished the season with a 9-4 record and a share of the East Bay Athletic League title. All four of its losses came to the
three seeds ahead of it in the playoffs: De La Salle, Foothill and Pittsburg.
De La Salle is searching for its 23rd straight NCS title and will face the winner of Foothill and Pittsburg next Saturday. A win
would give it and automatic bid to the CIF Open Division championship.
