Strong second half carries De La Salle Past Matadors
By Chris Jackson Tuesday February 3, 2015
LIVERMORE, CA-After a first half dominated by Granada, De La Salle quickly silenced the upset murmurs.
Behind a strong second half from junior Nikhil Peters, the visiting De La Salle Spartans scored
44 points in the second half to defeat Granada, 70-55.
Peters' 17 second half points only told part of the story for De La Salle. A stingy defense forced
multiple turnovers and led to easy fastbreak baskets.
Vince Romeo converted a majority of the huge fastbreak layups, putting the Spartans up 53-46
and 68-55 to put the game away. His 20 points were a major factor in the second half swing.
Following a three from Bryce Bonite to close out the first quarter, it appeared to be Granada's
night as that gave it an 18-10 lead. Instead, the De La Salle defense held its ground at the end.
Scott Newby's aggressive style was the highlight of the Matadors offense. His 14 points showed
his knack for driving to the rim and forcing fouls, also helping him convert five-of-six from the free throw line.
Collin Stafford added 12 points, going two-of-six from deep and Garrett McDonald added 11. Their
performances helped stage an early advantage for Granada.
De La Salle held Granada star Kameron Johnson to just four points as he missed all five of his three point attempts.
With the victory, De La Salle improves to 19-2 and 8-1 in EBAL, remaining tied atop the league standings
with Monte Vista, who it fell to in double overtime earlier this season.
Granada falls to 13-8 and 3-6 in East Bay Athletic League play and is in sixth place as it travels to
San Ramon Valley on Friday. The last time the two faced, San Ramon pulled it out in 62-53 fashion.
