de La Salle Heads to 5th Straight NCS Championship
By Chris Jackson Wednesday June 3, 2015
CONCORD, CA-Five straight NCS championship berths continue to prove the continued success of the powerhouse
De La Salle baseball program.
After giving up a five run lead, the top-seeded De La Salle Spartans survived in 7-6 fashion against Amador Valley,
advancing to the NCS Division 1 championship on Saturday.
Andrew Schatz's RBI single in the bottom of the third made it 6-1 Spartans and it appeared to be their day. The rout
seemed to be on, but Amador thought otherwise and powered its way back.
Connor Mays scored on an error and Andrew Crabill doubled to make it 6-3, starting the five-run top half of the fourth.
The ensuing drama added to another thrilling postseason game involving Amador Valley.
Jake McIntosh doubled in a run to trim the deficit to 6-4 and one more hit would likely even it all up. Collin Miller delivered,
launching a two-run double to left and tying it up at six, swinging the momentum the Dons way.
The momentum would only last a short bit, with Mason Behiel tallying the final run of the contest. His go-ahead triple to
left field as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning, making it 7-6 in favor of De La Salle.
First baseman Blake Ogburn led the offensive surge for De La Salle, going 2-for-4 with four RBI's and two doubles. He
extended its lead to 2-1 and 5-1 after his two doubles, each driving in a pair of runs.
Amador nearly came back again after Patrick Loughnane hit leadoff single in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Connor
Mays has a soft line drive to shallow centerfield and the play at home was on. Patrick Loughnane dove at the plate, but the
throw from UC Santa Barbara commit Michael McAdoo was perfect to tag him out and end the afternoon.
A rematch of Justin Hooper vs. Joe DeMers is now in store for the NCS Championship. Hooper will go against two-seeded
College Park in the championship, a team he recorded a 3-0 shutout on back in May. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. at
St. Mary's College.
