Amador Valley 51, Concord 43
Dons Escape Behind Stokley Chaffee
By Chris Jackson Thursday December 19, 2013
DUBLIN, CA-After a blazing start and a dominant outing from
junior Stokley Chaffee, the Amador Valley Dons (7-0) came out on top, escaping
the Concord Minutemen (6-2) 51-43 in the first round of the Don Nelson Classic.
“It was all of our hard work in practice,” said junior forward
Stokley Chaffee. “We played really hard”
Chaffee, now a two-year starter for the Dons, commenced an
impressive first quarter scoring 9 points including a dunk (shown above), and
finished the first round with 18.
“I think I played alright,”said Chaffee on his 18-point performance.
An early 7-0 lead was all Amador needed. Concord was never down
more than 10 points, getting to within 15-12 at the end of the first.
Brandon Ruotolo was the sparkplug of the offense, drilling four
3’s-one per quarter-and helped provide the missing link of the Dons offense in
the second half after troubling execution from long range in the first half (4
of Amador’s 6 three’s came after halftime).
Despite a 19-turnover afternoon by the Dons, Concord couldn’t
manage to prevail. Daniel Solis was their only player scoring in double-figures
(10), and the 17 turnovers they committed didn’t help the cause.
Siann Rojas showed flashes, with seven of his nine points
established in the second half, and converted 3-of-4 free throws.
Besides Ruotolo and Chaffee leading the Dons offense, Scott
Rasnkik added 12, including a massive three-pointer to give the Dons momentum
back after leading 24-23 at halftime.
A quick 7-0 start to the season has helped bolster Amador’s
success. Tremendous victories over former NCS Division 1 champion San Leandro
(72-68) in the Amador Basketball Classic and 52-51 over Del Oro in the Gold Dust
Tournament has proved that they can compete with just about any opponent they
come across. A 69-66 victory over worthy Las Lomas squad has also maintained a
strong foundation for their recent fortunes.
Friday features a strong matchup against the commanding 5-4
Antelope Titans, coming off a first round victory over Heritage (64-62). Anyhow,
much is to be worked on according to Chaffee.
“We need to work on practicing and talking more,” Chaffee said.
