Foothill Ends Skid to Grizzlies, Advances to Quarterfinals
By Chris Jackson Tuesday May 26, 2015
SAN RAMON, CA-After failed attempts in the previous two tries this season, Foothill finally delivered against the Grizzlies.
Behind stellar pitching early on from Brett de Geus and two runs in the top of the seventh, the Foothill Falcons knocked
out the eight seeded California Grizzlies with a 3-2 victory on the road.
Brett de Geus delivered on the mound for a majority of the contest and finished with 113 pitches. He had a no-hit bid
heading into the fifth inning, the second straight time he's had that type of bid at Cal. In his complete game, he allowed
two earned runs and three hits, striking out seven-including starting out by striking out the side in the very first inning.
Early run support certainly helped the cause for de Geus with the way he was showcasing his talents on the mound through
the first four innings. Griffin Chinn scored on a sacrifice-fly from Vincent Tanisawa to make it 1-0 Foothill in the top of the
second inning and although that lead didn't stand, it was a key run at the end of the afternoon.
Cal proceeded to knot it up in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Christian Petrov, making it 1-1 and a whole new ballgame. Instead, Foothill finally got the revenge it was seeking on its rival from another city.
Two runs came across on a throwing error from shortstop Rocky Moore and Foothill regained a 3-1 lead with two outs in
the top of the seventh. All of the momentum was back in Foothill's favor, but after it blew a lead in San Ramon the last
time the two faced earlier this month, everyone knew the leading wasn't perfectly safe.
The Grizzlies managed to get runners on second and third with one out and following an RBI groundout to first from
Christian Petrov, they trailed 3-2 with one more chance to make it happen with two outs. But Zac Guardino grounded
out to first baseman Stone Godi and that was the finally play of the season for Cal.
With the defeat, Cal has dropped two straight North Coast Section playoff openers despite being the higher seed. Last year
it was the four seed and fell in a 7-2 contest to current University of Washington pitcher Noah Bremer and Berkeley.
Foothill will travel to top seeded De La Salle in the NCS quarter finals and has stolen one from the Spartans this year. The
second meeting nearly resulted in a sweep, but instead dropped an extra-inning affair in 16-12 fashion.
