Granada Bats Come Alive in Rout of Rival Cowboys
Granada 11, Livermore 2
By Chris Jackson Friday May 17, 2013
LIVERMORE-Granada wanted to finish out the regular season
strong, and they did that and much more.
Matadors hitter scored 11 runs and got 13 hits off of Livermore
pitchers. They brought in four runs off of walks.
But what you may not know, was that through the first two
innings, this was a pitcher’s duel. Junior Livermore pitcher Cameron Self was in
a groove the first two innings. His command was great, and the Matadors’ batters
were hitting popups barely into the outfield.
The third inning turned out to be much different. Granada scored
seven runs and forced the Cowboys to take out Self with two outs in the third
inning. After getting the bases loaded with no outs, Matt Richards singled to
drive in Granada’s first run of the game. Later in the inning, after the
Matadors scored two runs off of walks, UC Riverside-bound senior center fielder
Vince Fernandez hit a bases-clearing triple to give the Matadors a 6-0 lead in
the third. Third baseman Dan Whitney then scored in Fernandez on a single to
give Granada a 7-0 lead.
Fernandez went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and 4 RBI’s.
1st Baseman Matt Richards gave Granada an 8-0 lead in
the fourth after he belted a homerun to deep left-center field to get his second
home run of the year. He finished the game with 2 RBI’s and improved his batting
average this season to a stellar .395.
Once the fifth inning came around, Granada began making
substitutions putting in players that have seen very little playing time all
year. Junior Matty Proetel came in at first base for Matt Richards, and went
2-for-2. Senior Justin Cash, who came in to bat for Miles Mastruoboni, got his
first hit of the season, an RBI single to left to deliver Granada’s final run of
the game.
Senior pitcher Anthony Olmo tossed a good performance on the
mound. Olmo pitched 5.2 innings giving up two earned runs and five hits. He came
into the game with a 0.97 ERA and seemed extremely calm and patient on the
mound, not getting rattled when Cowboys hitters got on base.
While Livermore pitcher Cameron Self’s stat line doesn’t look
good, all of the damage against him was done in the third inning. The first and
second innings he was in cruise control against the number two team in the
country. Self gave up seven earned runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings of work,
but the numbers don’t show how good he was on the mound to start the game.
The fifth inning was the lone inning the Livermore bats came
alive. After a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Sean Amaral, David Gomez reached
home after a botched pickoff attempt at second base. No errors were recorded on
the play, but when the Granada infielders tried to get out the Cowboys runner at
second base, Gomez beat out the throw to home to score Livermore’s first run of
the game and shrink Granada’s lead to 8-1. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Ruley then
singled to bring in right fielder Austin Hall and make narrow the Matadors’ lead
to 8-2.
Granada finished the regular season 23-1 and 13-1 in EBAL,
winning their first EBAL title since 1992. They will be the #1 seed in the NCS
Division 1 Playoffs, and will likely get a first-round bye. Livermore will
compete in the NCS Division 2 Playoffs.
Player of the Game: Matt Richards. The senior 1st baseman hit his second home run of the year
and drove in two RBI’s while going 2-for-3 and helping the Matadors to an 11-2 win over cross-town rival Livermore.
Pitching: Win-Anthony Olmo (11-0)
Loss-Cameron Self (2-2)
