Grizzlies Defense Holds Ground on Homecoming

SAN RAMON, CA-Homecoming spoils weren't in store this time for Amador Valley.
The host California Grizzlies got off to a quick start before nearly faltering late as they held off a hungry and
resurgent Dons squad, 17-7.
Zac Guardino gave Cal a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter as he ran in from four yards out. Two scoring drives
to start off made it appear that Cal would cruise to another victory.
Amador thought otherwise.
A stingy Amador defense showed its worth in the second half, holding Justin Locklear to just 17 yards on 9 carries in
the second half. The offense nearly staged the comeback as well.
Mitchell Copenhaver got the only Dons score on a four yard scamper with 3:23 remaining in the third, cutting the deficit
to 14-7. He finished with 58 yards on 10 carries and was one of the many featured backs for them.
Ronnie Jones nearly led the Amador comeback before an interception put an end to it. A ten play drive that would've tied
the contest got all the way to the Cal three yard line before the heroics ensued.
A pass intended for Harrison Mayo in the back of the end zone was intercepted by Peter Farina midway through the
fourth quarter. Cal's potent run game behind a powerful offensive line sealed the victory afterwards.
Besides the late interception, Jones had an impressive performance for Amador. He completed 18-of-29 passes for
163 yards. His top targets were Collin Miller and Malechi Davidson, who combined for over 120 yards.
Jacob Woolridge also impressed for Cal, tossing for 91 yards and a score as he completed 7-of-10 throws. He opened up
the scoring as he connected with Justin Locklear for 29 yards, giving the Grizzlies a 7-0 lead with 4:41 left in the first.
The victory keeps Cal tied atop the East Bay Athletic League with Foothill. Both teams meet next week in Pleasanton for a
contest that should likely determine who comes out as the league champion.
