Cal Snaps Losing Streak, Sweeps Dons
By Chris Jackson Friday May 1, 2015
PLEASANTON, CA-The losing days are finally over for the Grizzlies.
Behind a two run first inning and timely pitching, the California Grizzlies defeated the host Amador Valley
Dons on Friday afternoon, 3-2.
Following an error, Cal scored two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead on a throwing error and a fielders choice.
That was just part of Amador's fielding woes.
Six errors paved the way and were ultimately the deciding factor in the Cal victory. Two of the runs were earned,
but the third wasn't as Zac Guardino scored for the second time due to an error.
Amador wouldn't back down lightly, however, answering with runs in the first and second innings to even it up
and make it a ball game once again.
Steven Nice hit a hard liner down the left field line for a double, trimming the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the first.
He was the top Dons player offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The score was knotted up in the second as Donald Camello came around on a fielders choice, making it 2-2. But late
fielding blunders cost them.
AJ Curtis tossed the grounder out of play in the fifth inning and Zac Guardino scored, making it 3-2 and setting up the
victory as closer Zach Chalmers shutdown the Dons offense.
Sophomore sensation Zach Chalmers replaced starter Liam Steigerwald in the sixth inning and was in cruise control
on the mound. He struckout the side in the seventh inning to give Cal its first victory since April 9, when it defeated
nationally ranked College Park in Elite 8 championship.
Steigerwald tossed five innings and surrendered two earned runs, five hits and four walks, but recorded six strikeouts.
He entered today with a 1.06 ERA before improving his record to 5-1.
The victory for Cal snaps its five game losing streak as it's now out of last place following a Granada loss to De La Salle.
It now sits at 3-5 in East Bay Athletic League play and 10-8 overall.
Amador Valley drops to 11-7 overall and 3-5 in EBAL after winning three straight. It did notch a 9-2 trouncing of crosstown
rival Foothill on Wednesday. Second place San Ramon Valley awaits on Wednesday, a team it hasn't defeated since 2013.
