Harris Ross Finds Perfect Fit in Corvallis

By Chris Jackson Monday October 21, 2013
PITTSBURG, CA-After committing to the University of Hawaii a few weeks ago, Pittsburg
running back Harris Ross flipped to his dream school, Oregon State.
“I had been waiting for them to offer,” said Ross.
Oregon State has had a good tradition of running backs throughout the years. They have
been host to current Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers, along with former
Heisman finalist Ken Simonton, who is Ross’ running backs coach at Pittsburg.
Simonton was also a former Pittsburg running back before going to Corvallis.
There’s a certain chemistry that Ross relates to at Oregon State.
“I feel it’s a great program,” said Ross. “Family bond and a connection between the players. I like that.”
Although Hawaii was where Ross decided to commit to first, they don’t have the same
appeal as an Oregon State due to the strength of the conference the Beavers
compete in, the Pac-12.
Coach Riley has had a tremendous coaching tenure in Corvallis.
He has led the Beavers to seven bowl games in his now 13
year career at Oregon State, and has compiled an 86-68 record.
“I like coach Riley, he’s honest and he’s a great coach,” Ross said.
“Can’t wait to be up there with him and the rest of the staff.”
But it wasn’t just coach Riley and the connection that led Ross to
flipping his commitment to Oregon State.
“Their program. Their coach. And I feel like I can get a good degree there.”
Ross will major in business management, where Oregon State is known for their
tremendous business program, which has produced some top notch
entrepreneurs.
It wasn’t a surprise when Ross decided to announce his commitment to the Pac-12.
He’s already produced monster numbers rushing for over 1300 yards and 18
touchdowns this season, highlighted by a career game at Monte Vista on September
13th.
The Monte Vista game was one for the ages as he ran
for 464 yards and seven touchdowns on 21 carries in the 49-29 win in Alamo.
He set an East Bay record along with having one of the best performances in
Northern California history.
Harris has had a remarkable career at Pittsburg so far. Getting to state and winning
NCS is among Ross’ goals, along with running for over 2000 yards, which is a
strong possibility. Despite the fact that De La Salle is one of the top football
programs in the nation, Ross believes they can compete with them, and become the
first Northern California team to beat De La Salle in over 20 years,
and Pittsburg was the last Northern California school to do so.
With the type of season and career Ross has had thus far, expect this to not be the
end of it. If he continues to continue at this level of play, expect him to do
big things at the next level.
