Kearns and Langley Dazzle in Rout
By Chris Jackson Friday September 5, 2014
PLEASANTON, CA-The Division One duo of Kyle Kearns (SMU) and Isaiah Langley (USC) did just about everything
it could for Foothill.
Kearns recorded zero incompletions as Foothill trounced Freedom 42-6 after falling to it in the NCS Playoffs last year,
highlighted by a dominant performance from Joe Mixon.
“They were a good team last year,” said Foothill quarterback Kyle Kearns. “They had a phenomenal running back with
Mixon. We just wanted to turn the page and make this a different year. We’ve got different seniors this year who are
buying in and are playing as a cohesive unit.”
Not only did Kearns complete every pass he threw, but he also had 246 yards and 3 touchdowns. His 32-yard touchdown
strike to Ruben Mercado in the third quarter put the game away as Foothill held a commanding 42-0 lead.
“I thought I did what was necessary to get us the win,” Kearns said. “Our o-line line gave me enough time and I didn’t
have any pressure on me all night and I did my job.”
Langley showed why he’s rated as one of the top players in his class and bound for USC as he had two interceptions
on defense, including a pick six to give Foothill a 21-0 lead with 7:11 remaining in the second quarter. He also had
three catches for 89 yards.
“We just played unselfish,” said Kearns. “We came out and played for one another and that’s what it came down to.”
Ruben Mercado added to Langley’s performance both offensively and defensively as he had 108 yards and 2
touchdowns on 7 catches. This comes just one week after he had two interceptionsand 103 yards in a 30-12 victory
at San Leandro.
Freedom’s only score came on a fumble recovery by Gio Fauolo to cut the deficit to 42-6 in the fourth quarter, coming
as one of the few positives for Freedom all night.
The next opponent for Freedom is Granite Bay, a team it fell to a year ago despite having Joe Mixon on the roster.
Foothill is now 2-0 and prepares for a stiff test in Castro Valley in two weeks. With a bye next week, it will need
everything to prepare for Namane Modise and the explosive Trojans offense alongside Modise also being a star
player on defense.
“We’ve got two weeks for them and we need all of it,” said Kearns. “Namane Modise was on my 7-on-7 team and
he is electrifying. We’re going to need to prepare for these guys because they’re a great team.”
