Sacrifice-Fly in Extras Pushes Monte Vista to 1st Place

LIVERMORE, CA-With first place on the line, the Monte Vista Mustangs continued their winning ways.
Behind a strong offensive effort in the latter part of the contest, Monte Vista (14-7, 8-3 EBAL) defeated the host
Livermore Cowboys (13-8, 6-5 EBAL) in extra innings, 5-4.
Three runs in the top of the seventh inning started the madness and led to a dramatic finish. Monte Vista took a 4-2
lead, but Livermore answered back with two runs of its own, sending it into extra innings.
Monte Vista got the bases loaded in the top of the 8th inning after Vasconi was hit by a pitch. John Hooper then hit a
sac-fly to centerfield and Noah Cort scored, giving them a 5-4 advantage and ultimately the ballgame.
But the wild East Bay Athletic League play only continued. Although the game wouldn't continue after eight innings,
Livermore kept everyone on edge at the end. Jake Foscalina reached first on a walk and then nearly scored, instead
being thrown out at the plate after trying to score from first base on an errant throw from the pitcher on a pickoff attempt.
Foscalina's play at the plate pushed Livermore two game back of first place and it was inches from putting it into second
place and one game back. After multiple overthrown balls, his dive for home plate was barely stopped by Monte Vista
catcher Connor Bruce.
Charles Zaloumis led the Mustangs offense with two hits and an RBI. His RBI single in the top of the seventh inning extended
the lead to 4-2 and capped off an electrifying half-inning.
Kevin Key and Hayden Goldstein powered the Livermore offense with two hits apiece. Key's infield single in the bottom of
the first inning tied it at one.
Livermore squandered the opportunity for a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh. Two straight groundouts knotted it up
at four and the potential-game winning run was sitting on the third base. With the bases loaded and two outs, John Hooper
struckout pinch-hitterShane Silva struckout to end the inning.
A monster matchup for Monte Vista awaits on Friday as it hosts De La Salle, who it share the top spot in the league standings
with. Three games remain and Friday's contest will likely determine the champion and in the last matchup between the two,
De La Salle pulled a 10-0 rout.
