NCs semifinals Recap 5/29/13
Casa Grande 12, College Park 11
PETALUMA-Both Casa Grande and College Park made this a complete offensive slugfest. Both teams
combined for 34 hits, but eight errors.
Sophomore pitcher Joe DeMers, a Washington commit, pitched six inning for College Park. He
gave up seven runs, none of which were earned, and the fielding woes showed to
be the difference-maker for the Falcons’ season.
Casa Grande trailed 7-2 in the sixth inning after College Park scored six runs in the
top half of the inning. But the Gauchos scored five runs to tie the game at
seven. The Falcons then scored three runs in the tenth inning to take a 10-7
lead, but they couldn’t hold it. Casa Grande scored three runs to send it to an
eleventh inning. College Park scored one run in the 13th inning, but
Oregon-bound catcher Francis Christy hit a two-run walkoff home run to give #1
seed Casa Grande a thrilling 12-11 win to advance to the NCS Division 2
championship game Saturday against #2 seed Campolindo at Santa Rosa Junior
College, 1st pitch is at 1:00.
Amador Valley 9, Granada 7
LIVERMORE-The host Granada Matadors came into the game ranked 5th in the nation and
#1 in the state, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Amador Valley capped a five-run fourth inning on a grand-slam as Nick Carney drilled
the ball to deep left-center field. Carney’s grand-slam proved to be the
game-changer.
Granada didn’t go down easily though. The Matadors were down 9-1 in the sixth, but
scored three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings. They almost fully
completed the comeback. 3rd baseman Dan Whitney hit a fly ball to
right field with runners on first and third with two outs, but the ball wasn’t
quite hit far enough to possibly tie the game or take the lead and advance to
the championship game.
Dons’ 2nd baseman Connor Casperson hit a home run to left field in the
first inning to give Amador a 2-0 lead.
Amador will face De La Salle in the NCS Division 1 Championship game on Saturday at St.
Mary’s College. 1st pitch is at 4:00.
De La Salle 5, James Logan 1
CONCORD-San Diego-bound outfielder Hunter Mercado-Hood proved to be a huge difference maker
for host De La Salle. He went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI’s after missing
Friday’s quarterfinals game with an injury.
Senior pitcher A.J. Puckett pitched a complete game one-hitter striking out six Logan
batters while walking out none. Puckett threw just 87 pitches in the win to help
lead De La Salle to their 3rd straight section championship game.
Cal-bound pitcher Alex Martinez got roughed up against the Spartans’ hitters and couldn’t
quite help James Logan advance to their second NCS championship in three years.
The #2 seed Spartans will face #4 seed Amador Valley in the NCS Division 1
Championship Saturday at 4:00 pm at St. Mary’s College (Moraga).
