Bishop O'Dowd 89, El Cerrito 78

DUBLIN-After a slow start, the Bishop O’Dowd Dragons finished
the game on a roll to win the North Coast Section Division 3 championship.
O’Dowd started up 4-0, then El Cerrito called a timeout and took
a 20-14 lead on the Dragons at the end of the first quarter. But when El Cerrito
outscored O’Dowd 20-10 to close out the first quarter, they were beating them with their
athleticism and decision-making.
But the same can be said for O’Dowd the rest of the game.
The Dragons were beating El Cerrito with their speed, athleticism and decision making.
Sophomore’s Ivan Rabb and Paris Austin were the difference
makers for O’Dowd. Rabb, the nation’s number seven sophomore recruit, finished
with 25 points and 10 rebounds. He let the game come to him and allowed the
other dominant sophomore, Paris Austin, to score a career-high 27 points and
help keep the Dragons undefeated against Northern California teams this
season. Forward Michael Perri added 19 points in the dominant team effort offensively.
Rabb may not have been as flashy as he’s been in other games,
but he still was a huge presence inside. His 25 points all came near the hoop. 4
of those 25 points came on an alley-oop and a one-handed slam, as seen in the
picture above.
El Cerrito was paced by sophomore Tyrell Alcorn and senior
captain Marcellus Pippins. Alcorn scored 16 points and Pippins finished with 15.
Most of Alcorn’s points came from three-point range, as he made 4 three’s and
led the way for the Gauchos the entire game.
The game was basically wrapped up when Bishop O’Dowd took a
74-55 lead in the fourth quarter after they went on an 8-0 run. Their speed,
athleticism, decision-making and scoring ability was just too much for El
Cerrito to handle.
With NorCal starting this week, Bishop O’Dowd will certainly be
a lock in the Open Division playoffs and El Cerrito will likely remain in the
Division 3 playoffs.
O’Dowd will be a very tough team to beat in NorCal. They were
undefeated against Northern California teams this year and they can contend with
anybody they face in NorCal.
El Cerrito will also be a tough team for other Division 3
opponents to beat in regionals. They have a good group of players that can take
them deep into regionals.
Scoring Totals: El Cerrito-Alcorn 16, Pippins 15, Pridgett 13, Rayford 11, Sullen 9, Birden 7, Carleton 6,
Lipscomb 2. Bishop O’Dowd-Austin 27, Rabb 25, Perri 19, Gomes 12, Anderson 2, Walker 2, Davis 2.
3-Point Field Goals: El Cerrito-Alcorn 4, Sullen 2, Pippins. Bishop O’Dowd-Austin 3.
