PLEASANTON, CA-Monte Vista's outright East Bay Athletic League hopes will have to wait until the final day of the
regular season.
Three run spots in the first two innings were the difference, pushing the Amador Valley Dons (15-8, 7-6 EBAL) to a
quick 6-0 lead before getting a 7-4 win against the first place Mustangs (15-8, 9-4 EBAL).
RBI doubles from Jake McIntosh and AJ Curtis extended the advantage to 6-0 in favor of the Dons. McIntosh's efforts
at the plate were crucial in the contest, attesting two doubles and three RBI's.
Early offense helped lead to Monte Vista pitcher David Rajeski getting pulled in the second inning. He tossed 29 pitches
in the first inning and ended up allowing four earned runs and three hits, hitting a trio of batters.
The Mustangs wouldn't back down, however, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to get within 6-2. The potential
comeback was on the horizon for the league's top team.
Amador's lead was almost all for naught, with Monte Vista again putting a scare into it in the top of the sixth. After
getting the bases loaded with no outs, they only managed to get two runs across on a hit by pitch and a walk, trimming
the deficit to 7-4. Shortstop Charles Zaloumis grounded into a 1-2-3 double play to end the potential game-changing
inning.
Three different pitchers were used in the sixth inning for Amador and Anthony Trucco's ability to get out of it was
crucial. His earned save helped them record their fourth victory in five games, improving to 7-6 in EBAL heading into
a matchup at Foothill on Friday to close out the regular season.
A 3-2 De La Salle victory over San Ramon Valley added to the already surmounting drama regarding the East Bay
Athletic League drama. After a three way tie last year, a two way tie is possible between Monte Vista and De La Salle.
Monte Vista needs to defeat rival San Ramon Valley on Friday to at least earn a share of the perennial EBAL title. A De La
Salle loss would result in a a share no matter what, but a Mustangs win and De La Salle loss would give them the outright championship.
