Podany Tosses Shutout in EBAL Opener
By Chris Jackson Wednesday April 1, 2015
SAN RAMON, CA-Pitching takes you a long way on the baseball diamond and that was the case again for Cal.
A complete game shutout from senior Mike Podany told the story as the host California Grizzlies scored a huge
opening victory on EBAL, defeating the Amador Valley Dons, 2-0.
Podany needed only three strikeouts to get through the Amador lineup and forced a lot of contact outs. He allowed
five hits and tossed just 83 pitches. This is the second straight year he delivered a gem to open up EBAL, as last year
he pitched a perfect game against De La Salle.
The dominant season continued for Podany as he entered the contest with an astounding 0.47 ERA. With the win,
he's now 2-0 and recorded his first walk of the season today.
Third baseman Matt Ramirez attested to Podany's stellar display, except he did it offensively. He went 2-for-3 with
a pair doubles and extended the Grizzlies lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning. That marked his third double and fourth
extra-base hit of the season while also totaling his seventh RBI.
Cal's first run came on a single from Trent Kravitz in the second inning and that was all it needed. The run was
beneficial for Kravitz in numerous ways, helping boost his confidence after entering the game with a .154 average.
Chase Henley pitched four innings for Amador and allowed both runs, with only one being earned. He recorded
two strikeouts and gave up five hits, but his record is now 0-1 on the year. However, he's allowed only two earned
runs in over 19 innings pitched this season.
With the victory, Cal is now 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the always challenging East Bay Athletic League. It entered the
afternoon on a cold streak, losing three of its previous four. Now with a huge win under its belt, it will look to beat
Foothill on the road Friday. The two split the season series last season.
Amador Valley is now 6-1 after suffering its first defeat of the season. It hosts San Ramon Valley on Friday, who is
also coming off a tough defeat to Livermore. The last time the two faced, San Ramon won in a wild eight inning affair.
