Quick Start Propels Spartans in Huge Road Win
By Chris Jackson Tuesday May 5, 2015
LIVERMORE, CA-Early runs did the trick to keep the Spartans in first place.
Four runs in the first three innings were the difference for the De La Salle Spartans (12-6, 7-2 EBAL) as they notched
a huge league victory on the road, defeating the Livermore Cowboys (12-7, 5-4 EBAL), 4-3.
Joe Vranesh launched a solo home run over Livermore's "Green Monster" to cap off the scoring, making it 4-0 in favor
of the Spartans in the top of the third inning. That was the end of a scoring run and also the beginning of more tense
East Bay Athletic League moments.
Livermore got on the scoreboard following a home run to right field from senior Ryan Ruley, trimming the deficit to 4-1
in the fourth.
Dominic Foscalina grounded a ball through the shortstop Kevin Sandri's legs and Hayden Goldstein scored, cutting it to
4-2 in the fifth. More opportunities to squander runs in the inning failed as Ruley popped out with two runners on to end
the fifth.
However, sophomore Justin Mitchell wouldn't let the comeback attempt come to a halt. He drilled a home run over the
left field fence and the Cowboys were within 4-3 in the bottom of the 6th. De La Salle's Cameron Schneider retired the
next three innings to put the comeback attempt on hold for one more inning.
Schneider allowed a two out single to Kevin Key, but that was the last hope Livermore had. Dominic Foscalina popped out
to third and that was the ballgame.
Although the outing from Schneider wasn't quite like his one-run complete game last Wednesday at Cal, he got the job
done. He surrendered five hits and three runs (two earned), securing his sixth win of the year.
Shortstop Kevin Sandri delivered at the plate for De La Salle and helped Schneider's comfort level on the mound. Sandri
finished with two doubles and two RBI's, extending the Spartans advantage to 2-0 in the second and 3-0 in the third. His
efforts at the plate helped them stay in sole possession of first place, sending Livermore two games back after once
holding the top spot.
