Victory Puts Foothill in Prime Position

PLEASANTON, CA-With emotions riding high, nothing short of craziness and near heroics told the tale in Pleasanton.
The Foothill Falcons (7-0, 4-0 EBAL) were paced by a strong defense en route to a 21-14 victory over Cal (5-2, 3-1 EBAL),
a game that was decided later than expected.
Cash Connolly powered his way from nine yards out to give the Falcons a 21-7 lead with 7:58 remaining. It all appeared
said and done, but the resurgent California Grizzlies thought otherwise.
Jacob Woolridge capped off a two-play drive as he found Alec Dohmann for the 65-yard touchdown strike, getting Cal to
within 21-14 with 7:29 left. The offense nearly tied it a drive later.
After a crucial defensive stop, the Grizzlies were in striking distance. Big pass plays to tight end Matt Snyder had them
believing that a tie game was imminent. Instead, the drive ended at the Falcons 40-yard line with five seconds remaining
and a field storming to celebrate the enormous victory was in place.
The victory puts Foothill along at the top of the East Bay Athletic League standings. Two more victories over Granada and
rival Amador Valley, and the league title is all theirs.
Tremendous play from SMU bound quarterback Kyle Kearns will do the trick if Foothill pulls out its first league title since
2006. Despite early struggles, he finished 15-of-25 for 173 yards and a pair of scores.
Kearns gave Foothill its final lead of the night and that was all it needed. He connected with for the 22-yard score, giving
the Falcons a 14-7 lead with 7:49 left in the third quarter following a costly interception from Cal.
Floyd dazzled again and became the pivotal piece of the victory. He rushed for 76 yards on eight carries alongside the
go-ahead receiving touchdown.
For Cal, quarterback Jacob Woolridge nearly did the unthinkable. Coming within 40 yards of a comeback victory, he still
tossed for 251 yards and a touchdown.
Tight end Matt Snyder helped the cause for Woolridge, totaling 84 yards on just four catches. A college decision is looming
for the three star recruit.
Zac Guardino also added to the big play threat for the Grizzlies. He had 69 yards on four catches and has emerged into a
bigger piece of the offense in recent weeks.
Now that Foothill sits atop the league standings, victories over Granada and Amador Valley would assure it of a league title,
a feat it wishes to accomplish for the first time since 2006.
